JOHN ROBERTS
Berlin-based American artist John Roberts is the much needed young musical revelation the industry has been so thirsty for. Following a debut on John Daly's Feel Music and singles on Dial and its sister-label Laid, Roberts has quickly established himself as a young producer adept at designing almost classically textured and intricate Chicago deep house. Though certainly grounded in mournful or melancholy overtones, Roberts' best cuts exude a kind of blissful sadness, a contentment to linger in sorrow that owes a lot to the emotional release of genres like blues and jazz.
Earlier this year, Dial released a cheeky ode to the Chicago house music that's always served as such a foundational element to the label's sound. It was John Roberts' Glass Eights, a minor marvel, and the best deep house record we've heard all year.
BLACK LIGHT SMOKE
After a breakout performance of his stunning live set in Detroit and at Brooklyn's very own Halcyon, we are proud to host this mysterious Brooklyn-based artist. Immerse your mind into his sinuous, groovy and dark beats. His debut release, Switchback / Black Stripe, is out on a highly limited vinyl pressing from the upstart local imprint Scissor and Thread and will be available exclusively in North America at halcyon the shop.
Date: Thursday, August 4, at 8:00pm - Friday, August 5, at 4:00am
Location: Cameo Gallery, 93 North 6th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY
