this saturday, may 5th . . . we're having our first cinco de mayo party! step back with us into the mexico of the 1920s and '30s, and bring your glamorous and revolutionary selves to our fiesta. dress in jazz age attire, or throw on your sombreros and huipiles and come dance to traditional mexican music and hot jazz! come as a matador, a zapatista, a soldadera, or a mexican movie star . . . mingle with the likes of ramon novarro, diego rivera, frida kahlo, leon trotsky, delores del rio, pancho villa, lupe veléz, chavela vargas . . . cinco de mayo celebrates the historic and unlikely victory of the mexican army over the powerful and well-armed french forces at the battle of puebla, on may 5th, 1862. the victory not only empowered the resistance movement, but became a lasting symbol of mexican unity. this year is the 150th anniversary of the battle of puebla! doors will open at 9pm, and the first band will go on at 9:30pm. music & performance will continue into the wee hours. performers will include: radio jarocho, playing traditional dance music from southern veracruz, mexico the outrageous performance art star of burlesque, seniorita amber ray baby soda jazz band, playing their brand of hot jazz from the '20s and '30s aerial performance by the lovely kae burke of lady circus and more . . . our cigarette girl will have cigars, cigarettes, chocolates, and a special mexican version of our own secret potion. delicious mexican snacks by lupe's east L.A. kitchen will be served in our bistro area, and there will be a fire in the garden. for location, please click the box below . . . mexican costume or dressy/ formal vintage attire is required. casual, contemporary attire will not be admitted, no exceptions. {please explain the dress code to your guests, to avoid disappointment}. tickets are $30 in advance, and $35 at the door. click here for tickets tables are $75, and seat 2-4 people maximum. we still have a few tables left. if you'd like a table, please email me with your name and how many you'd like at your table. you will be emailed back with a table code and a link to purchase your table. table purchase does not include entry. click here for tables i look forward to seeing you on saturday! p.s. several sets of photos from our april in paris / 5th anniversary party are now posted on our facebook page: shanghaimermaid.facebook p.p.s. if you are interested in helping with party set-up this week in exchange for admission, please contact me. muchos gracias!
