WORKSHOPS

The afternoon’s hands-on projects will explore ideas related to current New Museum exhibitions and initiatives as well as the Museum’s neighborhood.
Digital Archive Memory Cards – Using collected images from the New Museum Digital Archive, create your own memory game exploring the history of the New Museum through documentation of past exhibitions and artworks.
LES3 – Discover the history of the Museum’s Lower East Side and Bowery neighborhood, and construct an image cube of related photographs.
Bowery Artist Tribute – Learn about the Bowery Artist Tribute and create artworks inspired by Bowery artists like Mary Heilmann and Martin Wong.
Art on the Façade – Explore artworks that have been exhibited as part of the New Museum Façade Sculpture Program, like Chris Burden’s Ghost Ship (2005) and Isa Genzken’s Rose II (2007). Create your own pocket-sized version of these large artworks.
Mapping – Visit the upcoming New Museum exhibition “Here and Elsewhere,” featuring artworks from and about the Arab world, and join a free tour. Then contemplate ideas about mapping and place. Create your own neighborhood map, use found maps to create new places, and talk with other visitors and docents about how maps figure in your life.

PERFORMANCES

The day’s performances offer up an afternoon of music showcasing artists who use their voices to traverse and recombine diverse musical traditions in dynamic new ways.
1 PM
Akim Funk Buddha blends rhyming, mouth and body percussion, storytelling, Mongolian throat-singing, and Indonesian monkey chants with a physicality that references breakdancing, martial arts, tap, and circus arts. Akim Funk Buddha will perform with special guests Chihiro Cute-Beat Kobayashi (dancer), Michiko Takatani (vocalist), and makeup by Mika Mitamura.
2 PM
Joy Askew’s melodic piano-based tunes showcase her talents as a versatile singer-songwriter (and dedicated animal rights activist) and are marked by a distinct vocal style that gently shifts between ethereal high notes and a more stripped-down bluesy sincerity.
3 PM
M. Lamar’s harrowing sound—combining operatic vocals with lush piano accompaniment—draws heavily on Negro spiritual traditions, Western classical music, and dissonant black metal.
4 PM
Lumberob is a kinetically explosive beat-boxer who makes tongue-twisted arcade music for the mind and body.
