About Dance Liberation Network
Bushwick-based organization Dance Liberation Network has been working alongside NYC Artist Coalition, Dance Parade, House Coalition and NYC Council Member Espinal on the Let NYC Dance campaign, focusing on the repeal of the NYC Cabaret Law that prevents people from dancing. The law requires spaces to have a Cabaret License, which is almost impossible for spaces to get due to the zoning laws and tedious process to get one. Out of only 20,000 establishments, under 100 actually have a Cabaret license.

The law, racist in its origins, dates back to 1926 as a way to break up black jazz clubs in Harlem and has been used as a weapon against NYC’s most marginalized communities since. For the first time in 91 years, a bill has been introduced by Council Member Rafael Espinal to repeal the Law, this event in collaboration with BOOM, aims to educate folks on how best to take action and apply pressure in efforts for NYC council members to repeal the law at the end of September.
